Developing sustainable sources of energy and minimising the use of irreplaceable fossil fuels through ‘green crap’ is essential if this country is to enjoy the benefits of modern technology far into the future. The trouble with Labour and the Conservatives is that they are only thinking as far as the next election. The Lib Dems need to be braver than that and start leading cross party support for long term projects that can’t be shelved by the next party of power to save a few quid.

David Cameron tried to brand the conservatives as green to win a few votes – not because he ever believed in creating long term change. Westminster politicians are seen by the average voter as wealthy individuals with vested interests in maintaining the status quo, including not upsetting the energy companies, land developers etc. People are bright enough to understand that sometimes there will not be financial benefits to long term projects for years, even decades. They will support us if we have the courage to break away from the profit is all model of development.

At the moment nobody, except those with vast sums to invest, are making any real returns on their savings. People do not trust the banks, but they do trust things like national savings and investments, premium bonds etc. If people knew that their savings were guaranteed and that they would get a base rate return on them, the majority would be happy – even proud – to invest in a fund that developed real sustainable projects and infrastructure that they could see benefitting their communities and the wider country for years to come.

I don’t care that the banks would see this as not competitive. If they want to compete, let them stop paying morally offensive bonuses and bring back ratios of pay between their highest and lowest employees that make equitable sense. Any bank could reduce their profits and invest in green industry and technology, but they choose not to. Give the British people the chance to put their money into building a decent future for themselves and their families and I think you would find that they are not as greedy as policy makers believe.
